Hey dude! carpenter her. your rod should be one size bigger than the crack. buy a buttload of the self leveling sealant, and don't touch it - just pour it in carefully so you don't overfill.

For the backer rod, either get a bigger size or double/triple it up. The idea is to wedge it in the crack to fill it up, not loosely lay there like it's taking a nap.
