Here is how it happened: 🕒 Time: It happened on April 26, 1986, at 01:23 AM. ⚠️ Cause: A fatal combination of circumstances: serious design flaws in the RBMK-1000 reactor and critical personnel errors during a late-night safety test. ⏳ Last seconds: During the experiment, the reactor fell into a highly unstable state. Cooling water was boiling off, and the power began to surge uncontrollably and rapidly. 🔴 The AZ-5 Button: Realizing the situation was spiraling out of control, the operator pressed the AZ-5 button (Emergency Protection Category 5). This button is responsible for an immediate reactor shutdown — it was supposed to drop all control rods into the core to stop the chain reaction. However, due to graphite tips on the rods (a design flaw), pressing AZ-5 triggered a final, fatal power spike. ☢️ Result: A massive thermal explosion occurred, completely destroying the roof of the 4th reactor block.
