On March 3 and 4, 1998, thousands of people gathered in Abuja for what became known as the “Two Million Man March,” a massive pro-Abacha rally organised as part of the campaign urging Nigeria’s military Head of State, General Sani Abacha, to contest for the presidency as a civilian. . The rally came at a crucial point in Nigeria’s transition programme. Abacha had ruled the country since taking power in November 1993, but as the promised return to civilian government approached, a growing campaign emerged calling on him not to leave power, but instead to exchange his military uniform for civilian leadership and contest the proposed presidential election. . At the centre of that campaign was Youths Earnestly Ask for Abacha (YEAA), led by Daniel Kanu, alongside other pro-Abacha youth and political organisations. The event was promoted as a 48-hour gathering across Abuja, with the New Parade Ground among its major locations. . The rally drew large crowds to Abuja, with musicians, athletes and other prominent Nigerians appearing during the event. Contemporary reporting also alleged substantial government involvement. The Washington Post reported in April 1998 that government agencies helped finance the rally and transport people to Abuja, while Nigeria’s Foreign Ministry invited foreign diplomats to witness the gathering. . The campaign continued after the march. By April 1998, all five political parties permitted under Abacha’s transition programme had adopted him as their presidential candidate, leaving Nigeria facing the extraordinary prospect of its military ruler emerging as the candidate of every recognised political party. . But the political project would never reach the proposed election. . On June 8, 1998, barely three months after the Two Million Man March, General Sani Abacha d!£d suddenly in Abuja at the age of 54. His d£-ath brought the campaign for his civilian presidency to an abrupt end. . General Abdulsalami Abubakar subsequently became Head of State and introduced a new transition programme. Less than a year later, on May 29, 1999, Nigeria returned to civilian government with the inauguration of Olusegun Obasanjo as president. . . . . #NigerianHistory #TiktokNigeria #Politics
