@matthewmillwood0: "Some inmates go years without a single letter. We had a name for what we did with theirs. We called it the dead pile. And what happened inside that pile changed how I saw this job forever." "I was a correctional officer for 11 years. Mail call was my block every single week. You learn fast — a man who gets letters is a different man from one who doesn't. The ones with nothing incoming? Those were the ones you watched closest." "Every Friday I walked that block with the week's mail in my hands. Grown men went quiet the second they heard my boots. Killers. Gang leaders. Men doing life. All of them watching my hands. Praying their name was on something. The ones who got letters — you could see it in how they carried themselves for the rest of that day. Shoulders back. Eyes clear. A letter meant someone out there still counted the days with them." "The ones who got nothing — they'd watch me walk past their door without slowing down. Every single week. Same walk. Same silence. After enough Fridays — they stopped coming to the door. They already knew. Nobody was writing. Nobody was counting." "Unclaimed mail — letters with wrong cell numbers, wrong inmate IDs, returned packages — went into a box we called the dead pile. Protocol said hold it 30 days then destroy it. Most guards followed protocol. Threw it out on day 30 without opening it. Never thought twice. But there was one guard on our block. Older guy. Twenty three years in. I'll call him Harris. Harris did something nobody else did." "Harris read every unclaimed letter before it went in the trash. Not to be nosy. He said he needed to know if something important was sitting in that box that a man on his block deserved to hear. A court date. A sick parent. A child being born. Three times in his career he personally walked a letter to an inmate's cell that would have been destroyed on day 30. Three men found out something that changed their world because one guard refused to follow protocol blindly." "The fourth time Harris did it — a supervisor saw him reading unclaimed mail. Filed a conduct report. Invasion of inmate privacy. Harris got a formal warning on his record. Twenty three years of service. Never a single complaint. One warning — for making sure a man didn't miss his mother's funeral notice sitting in a box marked for destruction. He retired eight months later. Never talked about it. I never forgot it." "Tell me — was Harris wrong to read those letters? Or was the system wrong for punishing the one guard who actually gave a damn about what was sitting in that dead pile? Fight it out in the comments. And follow me — because Harris never got credit for what he did. He deserves at least that." #prisontok #prisonstories #truecrime #correctionalofficer #behindthewalls

Gina ~Jamai & Eain’s Army :
I’m proud of him. Good correction officers are so badly needed. I wish there would’ve been at least one when my husband was begging for help that would’ve sent him to the hospital. I can’t say he’d be alive today but maybe just maybe I would have been able to be there. When they found him unconscious on Friday and officially passed Saturday morning I didn’t get notified till Monday and I was his emergency contact I was calling all weekend and they still didn’t tell me anything. Almost 8 months of questions that are still going unanswered because of federal and state investigations

I love where this ended. However my initial thought about the Dead Pile was "What a great chance at some Intel" 😁✌

idk where you're located at, but in Florida, when they was getting letters, we still had to go over the letters before it left the wing/dorms
