@.sabripasha: The monument was built by the Russian Empire between 1895 and 1898. It served as both a mausoleum and a victory memorial for approximately 5,000 Russian soldiers who had died during the Russo-Turkish War of 1877–1878. For many Ottomans, however, it was a symbol of their humiliating defeat by Russia. On November 14, 1914, shortly after the Ottoman Empire entered the First World War on the side of the Central Powers, the monument was demolished on the orders of Enver Pasha.
