The claim that stunned the nation, however, came from a different lawmaker — Senator Shehu Sani, who told reporters the money had reportedly been "carted away by monkeys" that raided a colleague's farmhouse. Known for his outspokenness, Sani framed it as a rumour he could not personally confirm, using it to mock a run of bizarre excuses for missing public funds. He remarked that the country was "becoming a huge joke," recalling how snakes had earlier been blamed for swallowing ₦36 million at a JAMB office.
