@anewtherapyandwellness: In my opinion, graduate school does not teach us how to be a good therapist. It teaches us concepts, ideas, and foundation, but most of the learning is done in the field. #therapytiktok #therapist #studenttherapist #therapy #graduatestudent
I’m in my 2nd year in graduate school right now for clinical mental health counseling and I think a lot of it is a waste of my time. I’m tired of writing useless papers. 😩

Post-grad Supervision teaches you how to be a therapist

It teaches you how to use modalities. The only way you learn is through practice and experience.

So true. Didn’t even prepare you to sit for the exam! Studying and taking it was a HUGE challenge for me.

VSU has a good program they are very hands on because they have their own clinic that graduate students work at.

The thing I wish they were honest about was the f ing narcissist clinical supervisors. They are straight up evil abusive and gaslight you, dismiss you, make you feel stupid. Not every job but knowing you may have a supervisor who is just sadistic and likes torture you. Trust your judgement and try to get out as soon as you see that. Be careful or these contracts at group practices they will try to lock you in and read carefully about your benefits and WHEN they start. Know the pay how are you getting paid, how are you getting clients, etc. New grad licensed social worker. Just got fired for not being able to get enough clients. Dont work at a place thats fee for service and tell you that you have to market yourself to get clients! It will burn you and they will throw you away. Honestly not to scare anyone but they need to tell the truth this is like working at goldman sachs you can be fired for any reason whatsoever. This field is awful and will grind you up. The people in power tend to be really manipulative. People always talk about nurses eating their young but nobody talks about social workers and therapists doing the same. You may find a great job but just be wary. Also the field is REALLY small everyone knows everyone so be mindful.

Grad school and working inpatient psych taught me to pass the NCE, which was a breeze. Took it and passed the first try years ago. But I agree grad school doesn’t really teach you how to be a therapist. I learned a lot working inpatient and during supervision. Some of it was helpful during practicum though. I may jump back into direct practice one of these days if the money is right.

Not an unpopular opinion at all. I feel like my MSW program definitely didn’t prepare us to be a therapist at all. Most of what I learned is in supervision and trial and error. To hear a therapy based degree holder say the same thing is not surprising.

I totally did…I wish everyone completed my program. We had mock sessions, we diagnosed through case studies, and made transcribed some sessions so that we could go back and label our skills and explain why we responded in those ways. One time a professor even interpreted our dreams

Where did you go to school/ state? We were learning 1st semester/ fishbowl IYKYK! 2nd semester working with undergrad, two way glass. 3rd semester working at the school public office for community. 4th semester 300 hrs intern for graduation . By the time had a good basis in “how to be a therapist “ Honestly, you’re always learning how to be a therapist, no matter how long you’ve done this.

wait so what is internship for during graduate school when you start building your case?? that should be hands on experience unless your school didn’t require that
