How I build with Claude 👇 Academy in bio 🔗 Video hero that does not destroy your load time, step by step: 1. The tag: video autoplay muted loop playsinline preload="none" poster="hero.jpg". Without muted the browser blocks autoplay. Without playsinline iOS opens it fullscreen and hijacks the page. 2. Ship two files. H.264 mp4 at 1920x1080 and a WebM VP9 at the same size, WebM first in the source order. WebM lands around 40% smaller and Chrome takes it. 3. Target under 3MB for a 10 second loop. Cut the bitrate to 1500k, drop to 24fps, and strip the audio track entirely with an ffmpeg flag. Nobody hears a hero video. 4. preload="none" plus a poster means the first paint is a single JPEG. Then load the video only when it can actually be seen, with an IntersectionObserver that sets video.src and calls video.play() on first intersection. 5. Respect the user: if (window.matchMedia('(prefers-reduced-motion: reduce)').matches) skip the video and keep the poster. This is an accessibility requirement, not a nice to have. 6. On mobile serve the poster only. A 3MB video on a 4G connection buys you nothing on a 390px screen. 7. Loop seam: cut the clip so the last frame nearly matches the first. Otherwise every 10 seconds there is a visible jump that people notice without knowing why. Text staying readable over moving footage: 8. Never put text straight on video. Add a scrim: position absolute overlay with linear-gradient(90deg, rgba(255,255,255,0.92) 0%, rgba(255,255,255,0.4) 45%, transparent 70%). 9. The gradient runs toward the text side only, so the footage stays clean where nothing sits on top. 10. Check contrast against the BRIGHTEST frame of the clip, not the first one. Clouds drifting into your headline is how sites fail an audit after launch. Dropdown nav that behaves: 11. Give the trigger aria-expanded and aria-haspopup="true". Toggle aria-expanded on click. 12. Open on click, not on hover. Hover menus are unusable on touch and fire by accident on desktop. 13. Close on Escape, on click outside, and on focus leaving the panel. Trap Tab inside the panel while it is open. 14. Animate with opacity and transform: translateY(-8px) to 0 over 180ms, and set visibility hidden when closed so screen readers skip it. Save this if you want a hero that loads fast ✈️ #claudefable5 #buildinpublic #webdesign #minimal #fyp
