@driphistorian: THE BLOODY KING | Henry VIII (1491–1547) was King of England from 1509 until his death, the second monarch of the Tudor dynasty. Ascending the throne following the death of his father, Henry VII, his early reign was marked by military ventures in France and papal favour, earning the title Fidei Defensor in 1521. The absence of a surviving male heir from his marriage to Catherine of Aragon prompted his pursuit of an annulment in the late 1520s. When Pope Clement VII refused the request, Henry broke with Roman Catholic authority. Through parliamentary statutes, including the Act of Supremacy in 1534, he established the monarch as the Supreme Head of the Church of England, altering the constitutional and religious structure of the nation. The Break with Rome enabled Henry to marry Anne Boleyn, the first of five subsequent marriages aimed at securing male succession. His reign saw the Dissolution of the Monasteries between 1536 and 1541, a process directed by chief minister Thomas Cromwell that transferred vast monastic lands and wealth to the Crown and gentry. The administration implemented institutional centralisation, incorporating Wales into the English legal framework via the Laws in Wales Acts and declaring Henry King of Ireland in 1542. Domestic resistance to these religious and fiscal changes manifested in regional uprisings, including the Pilgrimage of Grace in 1536. The final decade of his reign involved costly military campaigns against Scotland and France, including the capture of Boulogne in 1544. These conflicts drained royal reserves, leading to systematic debasement of the coinage and economic inflation. Despite these financial strains, Henry expanded the standing navy, laying structural foundations for future maritime infrastructure.
