@dr.michaelsmotorcycles: Did your parents do this too? I grew up thinking we were going to crash or get arrested whenever I turned on the interior car light. It turns out they weren’t completely making it up. When you spend time in the dark, your eyes gradually switch into night mode. Your pupils widen to collect more light, and a pigment called rhodopsin rebuilds inside the rod cells of your retina. Those rods are extremely sensitive to dim light and play a major role in night vision. Turning on the interior light begins interrupting that dark adaptation. Your pupils constrict, and your rods temporarily become less sensitive to the darkness outside. But the light creates another issue too. When the inside of the car is brighter than the road, some of that light reflects off the inside of the windshield. The glass begins acting a little like a mirror, which reduces the contrast between the road and darker objects around it. That can make pedestrians, animals, debris or other poorly lit objects more difficult to detect. A dome light is unlikely to instantly cause a crash, and modern headlights provide plenty of illumination directly ahead. But it really can make the driver’s view outside less clear, especially on a very dark road.
