RAPID CITY, S.D. (KOTA) - Stars No Kill Rescue is asking for community donations to cover operating costs and continue taking in animals. The organization needs help with veterinary visits, rent and supplies, according to rescue leaders. Founder Michelle Brock said the rescue has faced ongoing challenges for years because it does not have a reliable source of funding. “It’s been a struggle for many years, we don’t have a steady income, we run 100% on donations, our adoption fees, and our fundraisers, and for us to shut down, it would tear us apart,” Brock said. Community donations have helped the rescue pay $1,225 toward a $2,000 veterinary bill at Fall River Vet. The rescue has applied for a $5,000 grant and expects to learn whether it is approved around May 10. Brock said it is the only grant application that has replied so far. “Hopefully here soon we will start hearing, and getting approved we hope for grants because it does cost us $15,000 a month to run the operation, which is $500 a day,” Brock said. The rescue thanked Marta’s Deadwood Dog House for helping re-home four of its dogs. Brock said community members have supported the organization by sharing posts, giving monthly or one-time donations, dropping off items, fostering animals and volunteering time.
