nobody "needs" to use AI, but I assure you experts are all using LLMs. The moral stance around LLMs being bad is a social media phenomenon, not something actual experts care about. I work with PhD senior scientists and they love LLMs

I mean this in a completely constructive way but referring to someone as not a scientist or not an expert without specificity is an absolutely meaningless statement sort of meant as a dig that is not arguable because it's not saying anything while trying to be definitive. Using broad category like scientist is like saying someone is not an athlete or a professional because you have made up a very specific set of rules in your head, or with your chosen group, that you were not willing to share with the rest of us. You can say he's not an astrophysicist and you can say he's not an expert in the field of space but you try to categorically exclude someone from being a scientist or an expert of any kind as a way to discredit without making a precise criticism.

My problem is that people are criticizing him as if the scripts/information is AI generated, but the admission was using it as a search engine, like pulling footnotes from a Wikipedia article. This conversation would be more accurate/interesting if it focused on the ethics of using an LLM to find papers online. He said he was finding more niche papers, is that beneficial? Is it more susceptible to searcher confirmation bias? I want to see more analysis from that perspective, because, yes while any use of ai puts into question what else has it been used for that HASN'T been disclosed, I think it's worth dissecting the implications of its use as a search engine, even if the user forms and writes their own thoughts on the sites it finds (and, like, how does this differ from a search engine like Google? the major thing I can think of is stronger confirmation bias, but other search engines are susceptible to that as well).

As a research director with a graduate degree in my subject, AI models are useful at writing code to run models. But you need to document using it and if you don’t know what you’re doing a LLM is useless as it doesn’t know details and messes up.

he is an expert and guess what experts especially in the science and medical fields are using AI all the time it's leading to advancements that will save lives and improve the quality of life. don't tell nobody because people like to feel they have a right to be morally and ethically better than somebody as they whisper into a mic that's connected to a phone that's integrated with AI that's connected to a app that's integrated to AI that are all connected to data centers.. we must protect these people's feelings or they might move on to something actually productive in their lives...

We can all just talk in our buckets of expertise, and only ever listen to those ordained by the institutions. When has that ever worked out for civilization, AI shaming is the red headed step child of credential gatekeeping. Don’t imagine the democratization of skills or knowledge, maintain your faltering hierarchy in the face of unyielding technological innovation. Yawn, next.

People are mad that the person who summarizes info for them had something else summarize info for him. Meanwhile, they decry bad research while they spout of 2021 talking points that could be invalidated with 10 minutes of the actual research they supposedly defend. Mad world 😅
