Urgent plea for help for a 2-year-old small breed pregnant female ID: A613120, possibly a Chihuahua or Poodle mix, who is struggling significantly in the shelter environment. She was brought in by a citizen on 7/31/26 weighing 12 lbs, and if she is not reclaimed, she will be available for rescue on August 4th. This poor girl is completely shut down and clearly miserable here. She is very nervous and refuses to come off her bed, which seems to be her only source of comfort. Unfortunately, due to her advanced pregnancy, the stress she is experiencing may be affecting her unborn puppies as well. When a pregnant dog is under chronic stress, her body releases high levels of cortisol. Normally, the placenta helps block most of this from reaching the fetuses, but when cortisol remains elevated, some of it can cross the placenta. This can “tune” a puppy’s developing stress-response system, potentially making them more reactive or anxious later in life. Prenatal stress can also impact birth outcomes such as low birth weight, premature delivery, and even alter early brain development. We want desperately to get this girl into a safe, quiet environment before she whelps, giving both her and her puppies the best possible chance at a healthy start. As soon as her stray hold is satisfied, she can leave immediately. If you are able to help this frightened mama and give her a calm place to settle before delivery, please reach out.
