I’ve been a runner my entire life. It’s always carried a special place in my life because it centers me in a way that discipline often does. Since Bedford’s diagnosis, it’s been a way for me to release tension, anxiety, let up prayers, find a stronger version of myself, and also give up on expectations I place on myself because so much of this journey with Bedford has been out of my control. I shaved 25 seconds off of my last run the other day to make it just under a 7 minute mile, and it got me thinking about how much I could keep shaving off… for the sake of my boy. While he doesn’t always use his walker, he isn’t able to run freely the way that I can. But because he sees me running, he often tells me to stop and watch how “fast” he is, too. Inclusive playgrounds allow for HIS “fast.” Inclusive playgrounds allow for his abilities, and mine, and his brother’s, and we get to be together. I don’t know, but that’s a pretty cool mission we are after.
