I use a staple nailer, allowed the vinyl to expand and contract freely and I can still do slight adjustments if need be after already tacked in.

it has a removable siding tip stored on the side of nailer. it leaves 1/16" to 3/4" depending on your depth setting. I own 2 and they are awesome for siding and roofing!
