"Did you really think..." he said coldly, "...that someone like me could ever fall in love with someone like you?" Those words... Hurt more than the freezing water. Much more. You felt your throat tighten painfully. Not because of the laughter. Not because of the humiliation. But because... For a brief moment, you'd truly believed that one day he would stop hating you. You turned around. You just wanted to leave. To see no one. To hear nothing. Suddenly, someone stepped in front of you. Jake. He looked at you first. Then at your soaked shirt. He didn't say a word. He took off his navy hoodie. And draped it over your shoulders. The fabric immediately covered your soaked shirt. Only then did he gently zip it up for you. So you wouldn't have to do it yourself. "Come on." he said quietly. He didn't ask if you could manage. He simply stood beside you. Waiting. You looked toward the field one last time. Riki was still standing there. As if nothing had happened. You looked away. And followed Jake. He led you to an empty classroom at the end of the hallway. He closed the door behind him. The room was quiet. You sat by the window. Only then did you realize that you were starting to shake. Not from the cold. From everything you were feeling. Jake silently walked over to the teacher's cabinet. He found a roll of paper towels.
