My mom committed suicide last year and some people never reached out and then asked why I unfollowed them. Um yeah really think about it 🙄

EXACTLY! I am so sick of hearing “not everyone is comfortable with grief”. Well then you aren’t comfortable with me! Goodbye!

I find that some therapist try to increase your tolerance to people's bullshit. I agree with you, no one wants a fair weather friend.

"You have to be accepting of _____" is not something that should ever come out of a therapist's mouth.

My therapist suggested tolerance, too. No, my Mom died and they let me deal with it alone. So, I walk alone now.

If you try to be the non reciprocal friend, all hell would break loose, but other people can do it? Makes no sense to me.

And this is exactly why I don’t have any friends. I’m exhausted from showing up for everybody and no one showing up for me.

thank you for this. I ended a 35 year friendship late last year finally. she NEVER showed up for me. in person or not. never. after 35 years of me showing up for EVERY crisis (she's a walking crisis) can't even get sincere sympathy on the phone when my soul cat died. should have been 20 years ago.

Sometimes I won't even say what's going, and just need to talk to someone about anything and they don't show up so I'd rather match energy than have yet another one sided friendship

I agree with you 100% a lot of people have tried to convince me that I have to accept their low effort level of love .... no thank you. I rather us not speak or be distant. I know how I show up ... so if you can't match it that means we aren't mean to know one another

Exactly! Yes, it’s true. You have to accept people for who they are, but it is also up to you whether this person’s behavior and or presence is something that you want in your life. You have every right to use your discernment in deciding that.

Good for you! They expect you to show up for them but don't show up for you? They aren't your friends. They're using you, whether they are conscious of it or not.

I don’t have friends. I have acquaintances because it’s always one sided. I’ve been going thru a divorce/separation alone for the last 10 months alone…an acquaintance reached out last week because they “had a feeling something was going on”…

So your friends have to put their lives on hold to make sure to be there when and how you want at any time hmm🤔 please never have this type of “friend” find me.

I think there are different levels of friendship and someone you do need to accept people for where they’re at but also, then that person doesn’t necessarily get the privilege of being in your inner circle. Like, it’s the puppy beer deal—there are friends you go have a beer with and then there are friends you trust to dog sit your puppy.

the best thing one of my therapists ever said to me was "those people do not sound like friends to me." we can absolutely let relationships go that are not reciprocal. we can demote friendships. we can reconnect with stagnant relationships. all of this can be done without tying demonizing the other person. I don't have to make a moral judgement on someone to not want their type of friendship they are capable of giving in my life. if you love something, let it go kinda business.

🤯🤯🤯 i also had to take mental leave last year and my soul cat was diagnosed with cancer a few weeks into it and passed a month later. I lost a LOT of friends at that time, but if they couldn’t show up for me at my absolute lowest they no longer have a seat at the table. It was so hard, especially after asking people to check on me bc i was struggling so much. I really needed the support being single and no contact with family. It showed me who my real friends were. The people pleaser in me died when my baby did.

What would you want them to do? My best friends dog is sick so I'm afraid it's going to happen and he says he can't live without him. I feel like I wouldn't even be able to do anything of value if he says that. I imagine that's what a soul dog is?
