In May of 2025, we rescued a horse we named Oreo. The moment I saw him, I couldn’t look away. He was absolutely stunning. Growing up, I read every book I could find about America’s wild horses. Looking at Oreo felt like looking at one of those stories brought to life. Except, Oreo wasn’t wild. He was terrified. For the first time in his life, he had been ripped away from the only world he had ever known. Instead of open spaces and familiar herds, he found himself in an auction surrounded by strangers. He was pushed through chutes, blood was drawn, stickers were slapped onto his body, and he was shuffled from pen to pen with horses he didn’t know before being forced through a loud, frightening sale ring. My heart broke for him. There wasn’t a second of hesitation. I knew he was coming home with us. After Oreo completed quarantine and we spent time getting to know him, our team made a decision that wasn’t based on what we wanted—but on what was best for him. Some horses want people. Some horses want purpose. Oreo wanted freedom. So instead of asking him to become something he wasn’t, we gave him exactly what his soul needed: wide open pasture, friends, safety, kindness, and the chance to simply be a horse again. Thank you for making stories like Oreo’s possible. Every rescue and every second chance exists because this amazing ASIAB community chooses to stand beside these horses.
