@emmaskies: READ THIS before yelling at me: If this gets any traction at all, I know I’m going to be inundated with comments about how my opinion is invalid because I just want it to be exactly like the original story and don’t understand that it’s an adaptation (bonus points for saying I don’t understand that it’s an adaptation “FOR MODERN AUDIENCES” specifically, lmao), to which I will remind you that not only do I say multiple times that adaptations don’t have to be exact, but that the thing I expressly advocate for in this review is CUTTING things from the original story that he kept in this movie. Of course it was always going to be different, it’s an adaptation of a thousands of years old story being presented in an entirely different medium with its own limitations and opportunities. The point I’m making here is that it’s worth thinking about what a writer changes in an adaptation, and WHY. What did Nolan change from the epic to his movie, and why did he make those changes? What story was he trying to tell? Was it ultimately successful? Was it a meaningful addition to the conversation it exists in with the original and all its various other adaptations? The argument I’m making here is that the changes Nolan made are boring. Point blank, that’s the argument. It’s bland. The changes he made served to make the story more comfortable and familiar to a largely white male western audience (and if you don’t fit that demographic and you loved it, that’s great! I’m not saying you can’t!). It’s ultimately a VERY conservative telling of the story. This is the sad war veteran movie western audiences expect to see in media about war. And to what end? I don’t think it does much of anything successfully. I could keep going but I’m going to stop now because no one is going to read this far anyway. #theodyssey #moviereview #movietok #christophernolan

After reading the Odyssey, personally, I think Nolan's message is stronger and more impactful than the original. Nolan’s feels human and practical; Homer’s reads as a soap opera. Imo

if Nolan's movies could pass the Bechdel test I'd watch them but as it is, they don't so I can't be asked

The first thing I said to my husband after we walked out of the theater was “Nolan casting mainly A-list celebrities did the entire movie a disservice.” The second was “it was visually beautiful but the narrative is all over the place cuz of the amount he tried to shove into it and the writing was mid”. So this review makes me feel very validated lol

"beautiful spectacle" is a perfect way to describe it. Was the writing 10/10? No. Was it a tight, well rounded story? Not really. Did it have some very moving scenes, unreal music and the magic of 70mm film? Eff yeah.

The blood thing was so strange to me too. I left the theater thinking that it barely warranted a rated R

It is crazy how sanitized it is. But even looking back at Nolan films… it sorta almost always is

Two of my first thoughts I had while deep in the first half of the film were that it was ponderous and that Nolan didn't seem to have any idea what to do about "the gods"... aside from hazing Zendaya show up to look slightly sad at Matt Damon.

I felt like it also spent a long time trying to make me feel bad that Odysseus and his men committed war crimes and that’s just isn’t a compelling story for me.

I think this is where my thoughts are after seeing two weeks ago. I loved the soundtrack and I actually listen to it while I'm reading The Iliad. Considering how interesting the Cyclops and Circe turning men into pigs, he could have done more with Scylla instead it looks like something out of Clash of the Titans, it was really just speed run in order for Eurylucus to mutiny. And again still not over there not being the "nobody" scene. Instead of his ego earned through is cunning, instead it was just a dick move out of anger. Overall, underwhelmed it I hope we get more adaptions of Greek Mythology retellings like The Silence of the Girls, Circe or Ithaca.

The meaning was the friends made along the way. The truth is we have had decades of the Odyssey was just a bunch oral traditions by lots of people. High school teaches at best you have the theme of the journey. There is no overarching story. That’s how Nolan filmed it albeit with usual bromides you point out.

💯 to all of this. My hearing isn't the best at times and I couldn't actually make out a lot of the dialogue. The strong impression I get is that I didn't miss much. It felt like a series of vignettes one after the other, tbh

I firmly believe that Christopher Nolan is one of our most gifted technical filmmakers. I also believe he’s a middling at best writer and not in any way an actors’ director, which means I view most of his films as impressive spectacles more than as good storytelling.

Loooooooove this take. Yes on all the points. And honestly, I’m suspect that the whitewashing good guy effect has a particular motive at this moment in history. 😒 As you said, cinematic spectacle, but less than thrilled with the story.

I respectfully disagree with your opinion here. I really liked the vision of the story Nolan had, about how our civilization falls apart when we stop respecting each other. And I did not think Odysseus was a “good guy” it was the point of the third act. But your review is a valid critique unlike those… we know what those were. The not valid ones.

Also - I think Greek Mythology is super tricky to translate onscreen for a modern audience, because the morality of the gods and heroes alike is so far removed from our society. Zeus grapes women he covets, like all the time, and then Hera gets jealous and does something horrible to them as punishment. And that's only one example - siblings and parents sleep together, eat each other... A'Murica likes their good guys good. I don't think a US audience could handle any of that tbh

I'm going to see it this evening at the Esquire. Tbh I don't remember much of the Odyssey so I'm curious how I'll feel afterwards. Tyler ,however, is very into Greek stories/mythos, so I'm curious to see how he will feel.

I saw it Friday because I will see anything Christopher Nolan does because he’s a genius, in my opinion. I enjoyed, but it wasn’t my favorite. I’m not a big Classics reader so the stuff you mentioned didn’t bother me. I do see how it would bother people who truly love Homer’s story.

i spent the entire movie thinking, "This is a moment I should feel something. why am I not feeling a single thing?" I didn't feel anticipation, anger, humor, sadness, nothing. it fell so flat for me in that regard. I was frustrated at the lack of emotion I felt.

Regardless of what anyone says the siren song scene where Odysseus is describing what it sounded like is so haunting and beautiful. And the editing and consistent recontextualization of different images and moments throughout the film, this is a something soecial.

As someone who’s only exposure to The Odyssey before this was the Epic musical (I know that’s also not the most accurate adaptation), I have to agree that the movie lacked so much depth. I was very disappointed with the lack of Athena in particular, and how Odysseus was basically washed from all wrong doing because his men brought on their end with their own hands. I do think there were good moments that showed his cunningness (like how he manipulated Sinon with the horse), as well as his hubris (how he handled the cyclops encounter), but then the narrative seems to just have absolved from all of that because he was acting out of desperation to make it back home to his wife. The movie definitely made me want to pick up The Odyssey once and for all though so I can actually familiarize myself with the story.
