i go to therapy, and i’ve noticed my actual professional therapist will very rarely use a lot of the specific language that therapy speak obsessed people on the internet do. she’ll certainly use some when it’s relevant, but most of the time she just talks to me like a normal person. it makes me wonder if a lot of people even understand what therapy is actually like, and if they’re just talking like that to sound smarter and more socially aware.

Modern therapy is a narcissist training. Focusing on yourself 24 seven will never lead to happiness. It will lead to a lifetime of therapy

I kinda wonder what people mean when they talk about going to therapy sometimes. I personally did cognitive behavioral therapy for 3 years and my experience is totally different than how therapy culture/speak is used online. It could be the case I just got lucky with a good therapist but my time in CBT largely made me a better, more stable person and partner. I don’t have anything to add to the relationship side of this topic lol but I find it a bit odd and even scary how it feels like so many people go to therapy and it seems they’re just validated about every little habit or fear about any number of variables in their lives

Self reflection is critical however WITHOUT external input, you're likely to just convince yourself that you're correct.

As a parent- it’s harming children too. Not every no requires a therapy session. Children need reliable strong parents. There will always be opportunities for deeper conversations etc. but getting your child in a car seat is not the time for a therapy session.

I wonder whats ur opinion on girls that flaunt themself getting mad at their bf and their bf having to spoil them to make them happy? It always comes off slightly self-centered and invalidating of their bf as a person to me

My wife and I have a habit we worked to form, of clearly and frequently verbalizing things we love and appreciate about each other. Not in any formal manner, just, "Hey, I really appreciate when you do X for me, it makes me feel really looked-after and seen" or "Thank you for doing Y so much, I know it's not a huge deal but it makes my life easier and I treasure that". It's been so good for us, we have so many reminders of how much we care about and appreciate each other, and those make it WAY easier to have the difficult talks when we need to, because we firmly know they're the exception, rather than the norm.

Oh lord… I have been single for years, since I left my sons father & before I met my boyfriend; and once I found myself in a relationship… I discovered how harmful all the “relationship talks and advices” from therapists as well as from content creators actually were. A lot of times they are taking into account only one persons feelings & perspective and it constantly comes from wanting to protect one self instead of protecting something that is worth building. I just put it this way… if the roles were reversed… would I like it? Would I appreciate it? Would I want to engage any further? Would I feel appreciated? Would I expect my partner to communicate? How would my actions make me feel if I was the other person? And I realized all of this on our first conflict. Truth is… all relationships aren’t the same, nor can be measured with the same cups. For example… many would say to avoid texting to the max, but in my case.. my boyfriend is deaf & I don’t know sign language. There’s obviously a communication barrier on its own, so… if I don’t partake in texting.. how could we build and/or resolve anything? How would he know what I’m feeling if I don’t try to express it? even through text when I have never been a texter, but a phone caller. Even when we would facetime… we still relied on texting while on FaceTime. I felt as if I was unimportant and as if he didn’t care about me anymore, not because he did feel that way, but because he was so burnt out and busy from work that he wasn’t as pending to me as he usually is. but because something was triggered in me and I have a wound that I still continue to work on, as well as all the insecurities others have instilled in me… I retrieved, I drifted away, I even cried. In that time he wondered what happened, if he did something to me but he couldn’t think of anything, he felt as if I didn’t respect him for “ignoring” him for almost two weeks when he was trying to reach out. I was ready to leave him behind, I was so upset, but I was upset because I was hurt. until I sat down and started putting myself in his shoes because what I was feeling and thinking, didn’t go with what he has been showing me with actions consistently

Therapy talk only works when the therapist is well trained and their needs aren't prioritized in the conversation.

What if there was no contact for like a month because of a misunderstanding and when I decided to talk to him he’s acting cold. Should I speak about the misunderstanding or just keep talking about my feelings?

He clearly stated that he doesn't want to do a long distance relationship. Even though i knew it is a rational decision a part of me hoped that he would. The day of my my flight he texted "he hope to hear from me soon." And i can't understand what that means, i want to reach out but then i am thinking like what is the point if we are not going to be together. I feel like i am crazy for missing him so much,

People in the comments don’t seem to realize when she says therapy culture she doesn’t mean going to therapy. They mean talking like the stereotypical therapist(which they most likely are actually think of a psychologist). Communicating with a partner like you are a psych major is unhealthy and therapist/psychologist know not to speak to their partners the way they would a client.

Therapy is to let you know that there is a problem therapy doesn’t fix it. It just gives you acknowledgment that there is a problem whether or not you wanna fix it personally is your choice and your decision

this is a little unrelated but what would you say about people who teach to not give relationship type treatment, like intimacy or affection, to someome who wont/cant commit to a relationship with you (ie. situationships). Like "you dont get the benefits of being with me without the labour of committing to me" type of mindset

Manipulative people often succeed in manipulating their therapist. The copay is for validation of their behavior when no accountability is being taken.

I've literally never met a therapist that advised me or my partner on how we should speak to each other. My therapist helped me to communicate with and understand myself. I genuinely think that this "therapy is bad for relationships" mindset is deeply misguided. Good therapy doesn't focus on changing the people around you for the better, it focuses on making yourself better. The reality is that what you get out of therapy is what you put in. If you're going for easy answers and not expecting to do work on yourself then yeah, you're going to externalize things and try to change or control others, and you'll probably blame the therapist when that fails to improve things.

Guy here, thank you for your content, especially relating to texting in committed relationships. I got dumped because I couldnt provide space for my partner due to things like the constant need for reassurance through texts. its opened my eyes and has helped me put into perspective my behavior and for the reason she pushed me away. we had lovebombed each other and it set a very dangerous standard for both of us in what was expected for texting. thank you so much

I know this isn’t in a relationship. But I you I was seeing we ended things because of my health (I cannot show up) I didn’t really say / express enough care when we ended things only because I was scared😔. Do you think it’s worth sending another text just telling him how much he meant to me or just leaving things
