the white audience should be able to identify with a black protagonist otherwise they are exactly like the racist white people in the movie

People who aren’t racist don’t need to have a white hero in every film. I loved this movie ♥️

Why are people in this comment section being so defensive? If you are a white person and you think this movie is attacking you then that’s says something about you, not the movie. I’m white, I know this movie isn’t attacking me

The movie Hidden Figures is about the real life discrimination black women faced at NASA in the past and felt the need to invent a scene where the white supervisor played by Kevin Costner desegregates the bathrooms so the white audience had someone to identify with.

Idk about other white people but I don’t find it hard to connect with the black actor if they’re supposed to be the good guy… like if you need a white person in the movie just so you can connect, you might just be racist. Idk that’s me

why does it seem like yall are incapable of relating to something unless it is 100% identical to you? I relate to plenty of things that arent 100% identical to me or my experiences why cant yall?

Damn, so many people in the comments completely missed his point. 🤦🏼♂️That’s pretty harrowing. 😩
He’s clearly saying he believes the audience is smarter than the industry gives them credit for. In his view, the audience are the “good guys,” so having the cliché white saviour character just to make white audience members feel good about themselves is unnecessary.
Get Out is actually a great example of that. We’re so conditioned by that style of filmmaking that many of us assumed Allison Williams’ character would end up being the “olive branch” or white saviour, especially in the early scene where she stands up to the police officer. That’s exactly the expectation he was deliberately subverting.
