Modern aircraft on autopilot maintain their selected altitude using inputs from the air data system (which includes pressure altitude from the altimeters) and the aircraft's inertial reference system (gyroscopes and accelerometers). The autopilot continuously makes tiny pitch and trim adjustments to keep the aircraft at the selected altitude. These corrections are so small and gradual that you usually don't notice them. During normal flight, the aircraft's electrical power comes from engine-driven generators, If the autopilot is disengaged, the pilot manually makes the same small pitch and trim adjustments to maintain altitude, especially as weight, speed, turbulence, or atmospheric conditions change.

On a globe, the only down is towards the center of earth. There is no nose down necessary. Unless you want a plane to dive into the ground.
