@tiraofegypt: 𓂀 Ancient Egyptian Word of the Week 𓂀 Vizier Pronounced: vih-ZEER The vizier was the highest-ranking official beneath the pharaoh in ancient Egypt. Acting as the ruler’s chief administrator, the vizier supervised many of the government’s most important responsibilities. He helped turn the pharaoh’s commands into practical policies and ensured that the country’s vast bureaucracy continued to function. The title vizier is modern and comes through Arabic. The ancient Egyptian title is usually written as tjaty. A vizier’s responsibilities could include supervising: • Government administration • Courts and legal judgments • Tax collection and the royal treasury • Agricultural production and food supplies • Building projects and state labor • Government records and archives • Security and the royal household The vizier also served as Egypt’s chief judge. Important legal disputes could be brought before him, and he was expected to make decisions according to Ma’at, the sacred principle of truth, justice, balance, and proper order. Because Egypt depended heavily on written records, the vizier worked closely with scribes. Reports concerning harvests, taxes, livestock, workers, property, and official decisions passed through his administration. The vizier could also oversee major royal construction projects. Officials recorded the materials, workers, tools, and food rations needed to build temples, tombs, palaces, and monuments. During some periods, Egypt had two viziers. One administered Upper Egypt from the south, while the other oversaw Lower Egypt in the north. One of the most famous viziers was Rekhmire, who served during the Eighteenth Dynasty. The walls of his tomb preserve scenes of foreign tribute, workshops, agriculture, and government activity, offering a remarkable look at the duties of an Egyptian official. The vizier was therefore much more than the pharaoh’s adviser. He was Egypt’s chief administrator, senior judge, and one of the most powerful people in the kingdom. Would you want the responsibility of keeping ancient Egypt running? #AncientEgypt #history #egypt #AncientHistory
