@tiraofegypt: 𓂀 Ancient Egyptian Word of the Week 𓂀 Ba Pronounced: BAH The ba was one of the spiritual aspects that made up a person in ancient Egyptian belief. Although it is often translated as “soul,” the ba was not the complete Egyptian equivalent of the modern soul. Instead, it represented a person’s individual character, personality, or unique identity. In Egyptian art, the ba was usually depicted as a bird with a human head. The human face could resemble the deceased, while the bird’s body represented the ba’s freedom of movement. Some depictions also gave the ba human arms. After death, the ba could leave the tomb and travel freely through the world of the living. Funerary texts described it as “going forth by day,” allowing the deceased to visit familiar places, receive nourishment, and participate in life beyond the tomb. However, the ba was expected to return to the tomb and reunite with the deceased’s body. This was one reason preserving the body through mummification was considered so important. Images sometimes show the ba hovering above a mummy or resting on its chest, symbolizing its continued connection with the body. Ba-shaped amulets could also be placed on a mummy to protect the deceased's essential part. The ba was not limited entirely to humans. Gods could possess manifestations called bau, and certain sacred animals or divine images could be understood as expressions of a deity’s power. To the ancient Egyptians, death did not mean that a person became trapped inside a tomb. Through the ba, the deceased retained individuality, movement, and a connection to the living world.
