Often the conversation about breastfeeding and formula feeding is adversarial— I know y’all know that 😅🫣 But one thing that’s important to remember? We can’t separate the cost and benefit of our feeding choices between mother and baby. We aren’t on two different teams here— what affects one affects the other. I thought for too long with my first baby that I could give her all the benefits of breastmilk while personally taking on all the costs (and it cost me a LOT— my health, my sleep, so much money, etc etc). I thought I could shield her from the ways nursing and pumping was withering me down to my bones. I thought I could give her the antibodies and probiotics and bioactive components and somehow not my angst and resentment. And boy, did I try. And boy, did she suffer from my own state of suffering. I see that so clearly now, almost 7 years later. Those breastmilk benefits weren’t worth the cost (for us). She got the antibodies but also got a mother riddled with depression and wild with thoughts of regret. At her very most vulnerable, she got the worst version of me while I poured my energy into getting one more ounce of milk that I thought would justify what it took to get it. And it didn’t. Switching to formula didn’t solve everything for us, but it was the catalyst for so much that did— getting on the right medication, having consistent consolidated sleep, settling back into normal hormonal rhythms, the ability to take an evening away or a weekend trip or be a person outside of a new mom. And my daughter got SUCH a better, more attentive, more available, healthier mom— the mom she deserved from the start. And THAT is worth so much more (for me— you may decide differently) than antibodies or the not-super-compelling potential for 2 extra IQ points. The best benefit for baby is a parent that can parent well.
