Documents from this period detail the establishment of a Portuguese factory (trading post) at the Benin port of Ughoton.Early 1500s (Ambassadorial Correspondence): Oba Esigie officially sent Ohen-Okun, the Chief of Ughoton, as a formal Benin Ambassador to the Court of Lisbon. Portuguese royal court archives record this embassy and the diplomatic gifts exchanged, which included a famous bronze stool sent by the Oba to the King of Portugal.1514 (The Letters of Oba Esigie): Direct correspondence exists from this period. In 1514, Oba Esigie sent oral and written messages via Portuguese intermediaries to King Manuel I of Portugal. The Portuguese responses and logs detailed requests for firearms, trade goods, and the arrival of Christian missionaries.1516 (Military and Religious Reports): Portuguese archives hold letters from missionaries and traders (such as Duarte Pires) writing from Benin City. These documents detail how Portuguese soldiers fought alongside the Oba's army in regional conflicts and note that the Oba's son (the future Oba Orhogbua) was being educated in literacy and the Portuguese language.
