I think there’s a cultural element to this as well. I’ve had two proper corporate jobs in Australia, and while the structural hierarchy exists, the behaviours were very different, everyone was treated as though they were at a similar level, even the c-suite people were addressed by first names by everyone else. At the second job an American was hired in one of the upper positions and was soooo mad that he was copping shit from everyone and that they weren’t deferring to him the way he expected. He didn’t last long.
