So many comments and messages asking, “How could a good God let this happen?” Or, “How could you still love God after what He’s done to you?” And I understand that question. I really do. Losing Everett was the hardest thing we’ve ever walked through. There were so many moments that didn’t make sense. His diagnosis, his life filled with so many difficult moments, his passing. So many moments that have broken my heart. But never once did I believe God was against us. Well, I won’t say never once—there were times I questioned why, and I still do sometimes. But ultimately, I know He is for us, not against us. I believe our world is broken. A world that was never meant to be filled with sickness, death, heartbreak, and loss. But because of sin, we all experience suffering in this life. All different kinds and different forms. At some point, every one of us will face heartbreak. Not because God delights in our pain, but because this world is no longer the perfect world He created it to be. I don’t believe God watched our son suffer without hurting alongside us. I believe He grieved with us. I believe His heart broke with ours. One of my favorite stories in Scripture is when Lazarus died. Jesus knew He was about to raise Lazarus from the dead, yet before He did, He wept. He entered into the grief of the people He loved. That reminds me that God isn’t distant from our pain. He’s near to the brokenhearted, and He hurts with us. Walking through what we did with Everett completely changed my perspective on life. We spent most of our days beside a hospital bed or at home with our sick baby. We held our son in our arms as he entered heaven. Now we visit his grave and dream about the life he would’ve had if he were still here. So when I get to watch Eloise experience the simplest things, they aren’t just ordinary moments to me. They’re gifts. Gifts I will never take for granted. Gifts I’ll never stop thanking God for. Today is a gift. If you’ve never put your trust in Jesus, I pray you’ll consider Him. He loves you more deeply than you could ever imagine. He isn’t the author of our suffering, but He is our hope in the middle of it. He longs to spend eternity with you, and I truly believe what He has prepared is better than anything we could ever experience here on earth. One day, every wrong will be made right. There will be no more sickness, no more death, and no more tears. That is the hope I cling to every single day. Don’t miss the little things. Cherish the gift of today.
