I rewatched this episode yesterday and it was soo good: Frank seeing her every time he sleeps throughout the season. And when he’s on a brink of death, he was having a dream about being close with her, not wanting to let go of that dream. And the closer he was to death the closer he was with her. But eventually, when it was his time of dying he refused to be absorbed by the sweet dream of her and to let his life slip away from him. He didn’t let her take him with her forever. He chose to stay alive for revenge, answering the question she asked him earlier about where was his home: with his family or on war. He was so desperately trying to prove to her that his home was with her, but in the end, after everything he’s been through, it was not true, not anymore. Now his home is here, where he’s alive and at war with everyone who harmed the innocent.

The reason he said he was home is because he knew he had a task to complete, that he actually is the punisher. He understood that his family was gone. If you watched the second season of the punisher, you will see in the first episodes, that he is more open to people, then he was in the first season. So in this few seconds he had a character development.

In the comics, it is established that, after returning from the war, Frank was never able to go back to living a normal life. He simply traded one war zone for another. What happened to his family was merely a coincidence that he used as an excuse to keep killing, and if it hadn't happened, he would've eventually found some other justification.

I always thought he chose not punisher over his family, but David. Maybe he wanted to take her hand and leave, but David ran to him and tried to save him, remember? And Frank knew that if he died, no one and nothing could save the Lieberman family; Billy could get to them. Even with Madani, who would have thrown her forces into their defense. Frank Castle was their last line of it anyway. He couldn't allow another family to suffer the same way he had, or worse.
