![day 5/100: russian doll by victor & rolf 1999 their fourth couture show, five years into the label. the whole thing lasted just over fifteen minutes. maggie rizer walked out in a frayed minidress made of hessian sackcloth. the designers put a pair of flat shoes on her feet, then began layering the collection onto her body, one piece at a time- sequinned dresses, lace, diamanté, crystal. each garment zipping or buttoning from the bottom up so it could be applied while she stood there. both designers wore black for the entire show, so the only thing you could really see were their hands. in couture, “petites mains” is the term for the atelier workers who actually make the clothes and are never seen. here they were the whole show!
