This is why I stopped worrying about writing Kanji, it was consuming so much of my study time for something I may never use. if I can recognise it, know it's meaning, and know how to type it, that's enough.

Yeah, around 1000 is correct. I can't write more than a thousand. I feel like I can definitely read more.

For Chinese it’s about 3,000 characters by elementary and probably double that after high school.

Kanji legit makes things so much easier. Anyone who disagrees should play one of the early pokemon games where it’s kana-only. Manageable but it sucks so bad for non-natives
