I was terrified for her and my heart was in my throat hoping she would recognize his abuse and escape before he could take her and her children's lives. This is what trad wives really are, and this is the life Christian Nationalists want for women in America. Whether or not you've ever witnessed a megachurch sermon yourself, by the time you’re done with this book you'll feel like you've lived the fundie life right along with her. Pinprick Eyes by Danielle Hart is a moody, gripping story of a relationship that seems perfect on the outside but hides the rot of narcissism and addiction beneath the surface. What really captured me about this story was how I drifted in the fog of confusion with her, trapped between looking anywhere but the truth and feeling the dread that comes with knowing something wrong lurks just out of sight. A perfect follow-up to A Well-Trained Wife. Strangers by Bella Burden is the heart-wrenching story of a perfect marriage that ends with no warning, no explanation. It's a haunting look into the destruction men can cause to a family even after decades of seeming bliss. I don’t know how to explain but it scratched an itch that I had, to read about how men's behavior can destroy even the 'perfect' marriages. How carelessness can destroy a woman's mental health as surely as neglect or cruelty. I picked this book up and barely put it down until it was over. The Poppy Wars is book one of a trilogy combining mythology, historical influences, and one of the strongest female characters you'll ever meet. She burns herself with cigarettes to force herself to memorize the texts she needs to test into the best military academy in China and out of her abusive adoptive home, and it only gets better from here. You won't find any wilting flowers here, only a girl who does what it takes to survive and prove everyone wrong.
