We vow in sickness and in health with our spouse, but what if those words end up meaning so much more than we ever imagined? What if it means walking through a terminal diagnosis for your baby? Not just one, but multiple. What if it means sitting side by side through the hardest thing you’ll ever face together, the loss of your first child? One of the best pieces of advice we were given after Everett’s diagnosis was this: you can let this bring you closer together or drive you farther apart. From that moment on, we made a choice. Not that it was always easy, because it wasn’t. And still isn’t. Grief is hard. Hospital stays were hard. Watching your child suffer is hard. Losing him was the hardest thing we’ve ever walked through together. But we fought for each other through every season, and we fought with everything we had to let it bring us closer. That’s truly what it takes. And I can honestly say through all of it, that’s exactly what it did. There is no one else I would have wanted standing beside me through this journey. If I could choose again, I would choose Evan every single time.
