There are moments in wine that remind you why we collect, cellar and wait. Tonight was one of those moments. For the very first time, I opened a 1961 Burgundy a Clos de Comte, Nuits-Saint-Georges from Pierre Gourand & Cie, a historic Burgundy négociant that no longer exists. The bottle itself is a true time capsule. The fill level looked disastrous, the cork in shocking good condition, so my expectations were low. But wine has a wonderful habit of humbling us. The result? Absolutely mind-blowing. Incredibly complex, with aromas of truffle, dried rose petals, tea leaves carried by astonishing elegance. Without question, one of the greatest mature Burgundies I have ever tasted. How do you round off an evening like that? By opening a bottle from my father's cellar: 2006 Domaine de la Romanée-Conti Grands Échézeaux Grand Cru. A remarkable Grand Cru from one of Burgundy's greatest domaines, combining the power and depth of Grands Échézeaux with the unmistakable elegance of DRC.Two bottles. Two eras of Burgundy.
