I had no prior I terest in D&D until my favourite youtubers Outsidexbox gave it a go. Now I am hooked and this is the very first "Oxventure" they ever did as total newbies https://youtu.be/BKVj_5q1Z3Q?is=8qoQwIBq2Gsx3ba9

Pick a character you like from a movie, book or tv show, then adapt them. Like Katniss from hunger games? You’re a ranger, bow and arrow, chaotic or neutral good - add a twist - make them a dwarf - why not - Go through that process with your own favourite and you’ll figure it out 👍 don’t stress. Have fun with it

Definitely focus on Class over alignment, so just decide whether you want to run up and hit them with a sword/axe/whatever, shoot them from distance, or if you want to try and wrap your head around magic (it's not complicated, there's A LOT of variety and options, but might be daunting to try first, especially with only 4 days to decide)

think about what you want them to do and be like (do you wanna do spells or hit things? do you wanna be nice or not?) then pick the alignment and class etc based on that. not the other way around.
or just pick stuff at random and see what you get.

it's all vibes! and don't worry about alignment! if this is your first character, fully self insert, and then you can develop everything else as you play!

Most people's character is basically just a self insert for personality, but it depends on the group and the game. Pick something that matches the mood of the adventure if you can. if you don't know, just pick what sounds fun. do you want to be sneaky? rogue. do you want to swing a big stick, warrior, do you want to be smart? wizard.
alignment, in my view, is more of result.of how you act than anything else.

making a character is tricky, and seems overwhelming, but generally speaking just have an idea of the kind of vibe you want, do you want to be good, kind, stern, do you want to swing a sword or cast spells or both? figure that out and you're most of the way there, happy to help if you need I've helped a lot of people make characters

I think the most fun way is to dream up a fantasy "book character" then pick the things that would describe that person. And it's very ok to borrow from actual books and films!

Barbarian - hit things hard, be angry, wear few clothes
Bard - perform, beguile, and generally be hot and cool whilst also doing support stuff for your friends
Cleric - heal people through the power of god, also fun radiant vibe spells
Druid - heal people through the power of nature and turn into different animals
Fighter - hit things hard but wearing many metal clothes, or shoot things with a bow
Monk - punch things in the face many times
Paladin - halfway between fighter and cleric, very devout to an oath
Ranger - track things and shoot them, have an animal friend maybe or be a super dark emo who’s borderline game breaking powerful
Rogue - sneaky bastard, very good at all non-combat things
Sorcerer - innately magic no training required, all internal charisma
Warlock - made a deal with a devil/fairy/kraken/angel and now rely on them - bit like a nepo baby but for magic
Wizard - magic but a significant amount of training required, quite squishy initially

Everyone has different ways of picking character traits, eg:
* Stuff that is like real life you
* Stuff you wish was like real life you
* Stuff that would be fun to be if ethics weren't a consideration
* Stuff that's funny
* Stuff that is emotional
* Stuff that makes you more likely to "win" a particular type of encounter
I'd recommend coming with an overall vibe of your character first. Then think about specific DnD class/species/alignment with that in mind, rather than the other way round.
