Japan is known for being one of the safest countries in the world. And it is. You can walk alone at night without worrying about getting robbed or attacked. But living there, I realised safety doesn’t always mean what we think it does. For women especially, there’s a hidden side to this safety. Mobile phones in Japan have mandatory camera shutter sounds that can’t be turned off. At first, I thought people were just annoying for not turning the sound off, until I learned the real reason. There are so many men who secretly take photos or videos of women in public that the shutter sound was enforced to protect them. Women-only train cars exist for the same reason. Groping during rush hour is so common that these separate cars became the only way to keep women safe on their daily commute. And yet, no one really talks about it. It’s just quietly accepted as part of life. I’m not sharing this to bring negativity. I respect Japan deeply. But I believe in sharing my true, anti-romanticised experience to educate people and help them have realistic expectations.
