@theadventtruth: The Bible doesn’t leave the number of God’s commandments up for debate. Scripture repeatedly calls them the Ten Commandments (Exodus 34:28; Deuteronomy 4:13; 10:4). Not nine. Not eleven. Ten. Yet compare the biblical text of Exodus 20 with the catechism used by the Roman Catholic Church and you’ll notice something significant. The commandment forbidding the making and bowing to graven images (Exodus 20:4-6) is combined with the commandment against having other gods, effectively removing it as a separate commandment in their numbering. Then, to keep the total at ten, the final commandment against coveting is divided into two: one commandment about coveting a neighbor’s wife and another about coveting a neighbor’s possessions. The fourth commandment is also shortened in many summaries. Instead of emphasizing, “Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy… the seventh day is the Sabbath of the LORD thy God,” the focus is often reduced to simply keeping a day holy, leaving out the specific identification of the seventh day and God’s creation-based reason for it (Exodus 20:8-11). The grammar of Exodus 20 also helps identify where each commandment begins. Each command is introduced by a new imperative or prohibition: “Thou shalt have no other gods,” “Thou shalt not make,” “Thou shalt not take,” “Remember,” “Honour,” “Thou shalt not kill,” “Thou shalt not commit adultery,” “Thou shalt not steal,” “Thou shalt not bear false witness,” and “Thou shalt not covet.” The text naturally divides into ten distinct commands. This isn’t about attacking individual Catholics. Many sincere Christians have never compared the catechism with the biblical text for themselves. God’s law was written with His own finger (Exodus 31:18). Rather than accepting anyone’s summary of it, every believer should open the Bible and read Exodus 20 for themselves.
