In a rather funny twist, fear of what has become normalized in Uganda—abductions, torture, and killings—has pushed Ugandans who want to criticize the Museveni regime to become incredibly creative. People have apparently found a new way of speaking truth to power without making it too easy for anyone to arrest them. 😂 Instead of typing their criticism and calling out the regime in plain English, they now write words the way they sound. In some cases, they take English words and give them a Luganda pronunciation or sound, creating messages that require you to sit down, think, decode, and sometimes read the sentence three times before the penny finally drops. 😂 It is political criticism disguised as a decoding exercise. So, after seeing some of these creative messages, I took to Facebook and asked Ugandans to send their messages to the Museveni regime—but with a little creativity. And my goodness… you will be surprised by the level of creativity Ugandans have developed! 😂😂 Some of these messages are so cleverly coded that before you criticize the government, you first need to pass an English-Luganda intelligence exam. Here are some of the messages they sent. I’ll try to decode each one, explain what I think they mean, and then add my own commentary.
