A lawyer for the parents of two brothers killed by a speeding SUV driver questioned her ex-boyfriend today about a phone conversation they had in the minutes after the crash. Scott Erickson, a retired Major League Baseball pitcher, was speeding in his Mercedes-Benz SUV near Rebecca Grossman when she struck 11-year-old Mark and 8-year-old Jacob Iskander in a crosswalk near Westlake Village, California. Grossman is serving 15 years to life in prison for second-degree murder; prosecutors dismissed a misdemeanor reckless driving charge against Erickson after he recorded a public service announcement about safe driving. The boys' parents, Nancy and Karim Iskander, are using Erickson, Grossman and Grossman's husband, Peter Grossman, for wrongful death. Their lawyer Brian Panish will continue questioning Erickson on Tuesday. Erickson has been designated as a hostile/adverse witness, which allows Panish to ask leading questions in direct-exam. He pressed Erickson about his testimony that he spoke to Grossman on the phone briefly after the crash. He was at her home, where they planned to watch the U.S. presidential debate and eat tacos with his friend and former MLB competitor Royce Clayton. Witnesses said they appears to be racing their SUVs before Grossman struck Mark and Jacob; Erickson says he wasn't racing or driving impaired. "Rebecca Grossman called you and said, 'There's been something terrible that's happened.' You said, 'Did you see the boys?' She said, 'Oh, the boys,' and she hung up, right?" Panish asked. "Yes," Erickson answered.Panish questioned Erickson about his testimony that the call was less than 10 seconds. "When you read those phone records that you just told us about, did you see that that phone call lasted 48 seconds?" Panish asked. "Yes," Erickson answered. "So there was a lot more discussed than what you testified in this case?" Panish asked. Judge Huey Cotton overruled a defense objection and Erickson answered, "No." "How long do you think it [takes] to say, 'Hello, there's been a terrible thing that's happened. Did you see the boys?' 'Oh, the boys.' Hang up. How long do you think that takes?" Panish asked. "I was on the phone, no more than seven or eight seconds," Erickson answered. The phone record shows a 48 second call, don't they, sir?" Panish asked. "That's her phone," Erickson answered. "It shows that, doesn't it, sir?" Panish asked. Panish asked if Erickson told Grossman not to tell anyone they were drinking or racing.Erickson answered "no" and "we were not racing." "Could you answer the question?
