Dude it's engineering. We're forced to take an ethics course where the professor literally goes "please do not sell out the earth or humanity to make a buck" and these fuckers immediately go work for ai companies, military, surveillance, or private agriculture

Part of the reason I dropped out of engineering is one of my teaching fellows said during a study session “if you don’t know these 4 formulas by heart you probably shouldn’t be here this is highschool stuff” & everybody started snickering

Nah, it's like siblings. We can shit on eachother, but we will defend eachother to the death against any other major. And there is definitely a hierarchy to difficulty amongst engineers, and civil is near the bottom of that. When I was in school, all the CE guys I knew admitted as much but didn't care because they knew they'd have easier jobs and an easier time finding jobs.

I don’t think coders should be called software engineers for the same reason project engineers (with no engineering degree) shouldn’t call themselves engineers. If your degree can’t lead to a professional engineering license, you’re just using the title for clout. I wouldn’t care except for the fact that they try to chime in on salary expectations for engineers and other discussions around engineering careers when they’re in a totally different field.

At the core of it, many people in engineering believe hard is equivalent to good, or virtuous. They are arrogant about this belief as well, at least the loud ones. The software engineer scoffs at those who can't code, but his life requires and revolves around people who offer services and goods that don't code. From a thoughtful mother to the truck driver, they rely on those they think they are smarter than.
