You open the app, tap "Ride," and a car is on its way in seconds. Behind that tap is one of the cleanest algorithms in system design. The naive idea: loop over every driver in the city and pick the closest. With 50,000 cars moving every second, that's hopeless. The real trick is two moves. First, index. The whole map is chopped into a grid of buckets (geohash). Your location lands in one cell — so instead of the whole city, you only search your cell and its 8 neighbors. Thousands of drivers collapse to a handful. Second, rank. Of the few candidates left, you don't pick "closest as the crow flies" — you pick the lowest ETA, because a car one block away stuck behind a turn loses to one two blocks away on a clear road. At real scale there's a third move: don't match one rider at a time. Collect requests in a short window and assign the whole pool at once, so two riders don't both get sent the same car. Why this matters if you're moving toward AI engineering: when a model writes you a "find the nearest driver" function, the tell of a good solution vs. a naive one is whether it buckets first. If it loops over every driver, it'll pass your test and melt in production. Read for the grid. Grid first. ETA second. That's dispatch.
