I saw a writer accusing an agent of being performative because they had sapphic stories on their wishlist but rejected their story...then a few secs later they mentioned the manuscript was 210k words

Hi, Hello it’s Paige | Writer :
I’ve seen similar complaints online, but usually it’s when they send somthing that aligns with the agents wishlist, and the rejection states it’s “not a good fit for their list” which i think creates more confusion than anything. Form rejections create a lot of misunderstanding on the author end, trying to read into the layers of meaning, when there’s usually none to be found. I think the complaints would disappear if more authors stopped looking for subliminal messages in form rejections.

The fact that they don’t have the mental wherewithal to understand that their submission…might not be very good. It makes me want to cringe myself inside out on their behalf.

One of my fav things to do as an aspiring author is going through agent wishlists however I’ve already been through every single agent that reps fantasy (on QueryTracker, in the USA) so I don’t rlly have any to go through any more🤣 I miss it.

People are so interesting and bold because the only thing that would cross my mind is they hated the book and I need to self flagellate for 5 days. The thought of publicly telling everyone I submitted a book an agent specifically wanted and it got rejected and being like "🤔but why!?" secondhand embarrassment

I'll turn on the TV and scroll through a hundred shows looking for something to watch. I know I pass up several things I might enjoy watching, but keep looking for something I've just gotta see. Then I go, "Oh, this is prob what an agent does." Then I go upstairs to read.

I mean I kept getting rejections, and took it ad 'maybe my book isn't ready', hired a developmental editor who has sent me back 50 pages of feedback to work on (and I may or may not have started with a waking up scene which i didnt realize you guys were tired of seeing 😅)

The way I’ve always seen it is I can pick up a book I saw was my exact tastes. Perfect genre and comparative titles, but I can go on to read said book and I just found it fine. So I could give an agent my pages, one who asked for something I believe my book fits, but they think it’s just fine. At the end of the day agents are readers and that query might not even be the first ‘perfect fit’ they read that day. Always appreciate your insight by the way!

How do you decide on your wish list? Is it what you feel like reading personally? What you think will sell? What publishers have told you they’re on the lookout for? I’m intrigued… 🥰

Truthfully I just accept the rejection and keep it pushing… it clearly wasn’t a fit and that’s ok! 😅

Hold on... A paranormal romance story with werewolves... A werewolf falls in love with a ghost. But they can only meet when the moon is full. So this causes lost of trust issues and ultimately the local vicar has to step in... Actually... Never mind.

I know people who are just putting their books on Amazon to self publish and get printed but of course they take a large percentage of the sales. In your opinion, what is the best way to start the process of getting your story published?

Being an agented author you begin to see HOW MANY TIMES your agent has to read your book. I mean it makes total sense. You have to edit/analyze/market find comps. You have to love it to read it that many times.
