It is produced primarily by the liver in response to growth hormone (GH) released by the pituitary gland. IGF-1 stimulates the growth plates at the ends of long bones, encouraging cartilage cells to multiply and mature, which allows bones to lengthen and increase height. Adequate nutrition, especially sufficient protein, calories, vitamins, and minerals, along with good sleep and overall health, support normal IGF-1 production.
