Sometimes, the “angry daughter” isn’t really an angry person. Anger may simply be the emotion that became safest to express. Underneath it can be years of disappointment, feeling unheard, having to grow up too quickly, being expected to understand everyone else while rarely feeling understood herself, or carrying things she never had the language or space to process. And then she finally gets some time alone, and the anger starts telling its story. She realizes she isn’t only angry about what happened yesterday. She’s angry about what happened years ago. About what she tolerated. About what she needed and didn’t receive. About the times she stayed quiet to keep the peace or convinced herself something didn’t hurt when it did. That’s one reason anger can become stronger when life finally gets quieter. The quiet didn’t create it; the quiet finally gave it somewhere to go. And sometimes what looks like anger from the outside is grief underneath including grief for the childhood, relationship, protection, understanding, or version of herself she realizes she should have been allowed to have. The difficult part is learning that acknowledging that anger doesn’t mean you have to live inside it forever. Sometimes, anger is information. It shows you where something hurt, where a boundary was crossed, where a need went unmet, or where something still needs to be processed. The goal isn’t necessarily to stop being angry. It’s eventually being able to understand what the anger has been trying to say.
