you know who never hear they're beautiful? men. men are expected to be masters of poetry and relationship geniuses. women are expected to just be there - or at least, to simply fit whatever patriarchal ideal we all hold collectively, but never to put particular effort in being genuine and attentive. perhaps, men, at least some men, say "you're beautiful" because the bar is so low for them they think it's a special thing. and it is. it fckin is special to be told you're beautiful. and yes, men have also spoiled it with their opportunism and mysoginy. doesn't mean that it should dictate new rules for dating, as if all that men had to prove is that.... they're not like other men.
