I've been seeing this in the Hank Green AI discourse lately. Like, do I think there were deeply questionable decisions? Absolutely. But the comments calling for his head and saying he's only in it for the grift are crazy to me. It ignores the years of education/outreach/donations, etc.

I’ve experienced this on a very, very small level. I don’t post content, but last year I started posting pictures of a little free pantry that I would fill in my community. The church that sponsored the pantry asked people who filled it to snap pictures, post them online, get the word out, etc. I would say over half of the comments I got on those posts were people criticizing the food I put in there. It wasn’t healthy enough, I didn’t provide people with enough options, I didn’t have any gluten-free food, on and on and on. I tried to point out that the people who use the pantry are all homeless and therefore need grab and go food that they don’t have to cook, and then I got criticized for not thinking that homeless people would still want to eat healthy. At that point, I just stopped posting. And this is just a little free pantry, imagine if I was posting about local politicians or movements.

I hated the way people jumped down Eli Rallo’s throat for that video where it’s clear she’s an ally and had good intentions. My personal rule of thumb is that I’m not for shaming those that are on my side. There are always bigger fish to fry.

Being in community with those types of people is exhausting just on a day to day basis, I can’t imagine actually having a platform with thousands to millions of people waiting to pounce.

Yes this is such a good way of describing this. The left will occasionally loop back around and critique people who aren’t speaking up, but they will CRUCIFY people who do but “wrong”. I saw a creator make a video about ICE and how awful it is that they’re murdering innocent people and that we need to advocate for restricting or abolishing ICE, and in that video he said like “of course no one should fear for their life while doing their job” and more of the comments were about “wow I can’t believe you’re defending ICE agents” than about the actual point he was making. He could’ve said nothing and gotten way less backlash

Online spaces seem to attract a high number of progressives who struggle to forge real connections ftf and are not doing any meaningful work in their own communities. It makes engaging online with them nearly impossible.

Agreed. The Venn diagram of what I agree with progressives on has a lot of overlap, but I’ve gotten virtually screamed at about the issues we don’t agree upon. It’s one of the main reasons we have the orange menace. Compromise matters.

He’s one of the most progressive and outspoken artists on this app but he’s still being dragged through the mud WEEKLY by people who perceive him as never doing enough or not being perfect, and of course in the mean time conservatives won’t touch him with a 10 foot pole because he’s vocally opposed to them
