Not wanting to be taken alive, he took his own life on September 11, 1973 during a violent military coup led by the CIA and Augusto Pinochet. Pinochet would go on to rule Chile for 17 years as dictator, committing widespread torture and killings on political detainees, engaging in corruption, and tanking the Chliean economy for the working class. The Revolutionary Communist Party of Chile analyzed the September 11, 1973 coup and they put a lot of the blame on the revisionist Communist Party of Chile as well as Allende’s complacency with the left coalition that urged workers to put down their weapons when engaged in land seizures or workers strikes. A lot of revolutionary workers in Chile saw the writing on the wall and were urging workers to arm themselves for the eventual coup that was gonna happen. The pacifist line of non armed struggle before and after the coup still prevailed amongst the left so that’s why there never was a civil war in Chile unlike in Peru, Colombia, El Salvador, Nicaragua, Guatemala. Revisionist leadership in Chile urged the workers to not arm themselves and that’s a death sentence.
