On the evening of January 11, 1996, 7-year-old Karen Rosalba Grajeda was roller-skating outside the Saguaro Crest Apartments on West Valencia Street in Tucson, Arizona, with her younger sister Alejandra and other children. Karen briefly went inside to drop off her skates. She asked her mother, Rosalba, if she could go back outside and play a little longer. Her mother said yes. Around 6:30 that evening, Rosalba called the girls in for dinner. Alejandra came home. Karen didn't. No one saw her being taken. The search began immediately. Within 24 hours, the FBI and multiple local law enforcement agencies had joined Tucson Police in searching for her. A command center and task force were established, and family and community members joined the effort. But no trace of Karen was ever found. For years, investigators focused heavily on Rodolfo Sedeno Morales, who lived in Karen's apartment complex. Morales had already been convicted of kidnapping five Tucson girls and molesting three of them. He was sentenced to 248 years. He was never charged in Karen's disappearance. There was another case investigators couldn't ignore. Six-year-old Esther

Six-year-old Esther "Lizette" Galaz disappeared from another south Tucson apartment complex in December 1994, just 13 months before Karen vanished. Witnesses described a man talking to Lizette and calling her by name before she was seen being forced into a small pickup truck. Her body was found the following evening in a dry wash. The similarities between the two cases led investigators to consider whether they were connected. Morales became a prime suspect in both cases, but neither investigation resulted in charges. Then, in 2023, Tucson Police revealed that newer forensic work and modern investigative techniques had produced a potential new suspect. That suspect did not match the description investigators had relied on for decades. Detectives said it was likely the person responsible was not a Hispanic male, as investigators had originally believed, and they were broadening the search. Police have never publicly identified that potential suspect. Karen is still classified as a long-term missing person and a suspected non-family abduction. NCMEC released a new age-progression image in January 2026 showing what she may look like at 37. And every year, her sister Alejandra still hangs their Christmas picture. Thirty years later, Karen's family is still waiting for her to come home. If you have information about Karen's disappearance, contact the Tucson Police Department at 520-791-4444. #KarenGrajeda #ArizonaFiles #MissingPerson #TrueCrime #ColdCase
