Apparently Hollywood also had a rule that in any movie about slavery, there had to be at least one sympathetic white character to avoid painting all whites as bad and to have someone for white audience members to relate to. What annoys me most is that we all watched and loved these movies for what they were. Sure, people criticized them back then too, but nothing like today’s obsession with calling everything “woke.” Now people seem to notice skin color or gender before they even notice the story. Movies used to be an escape from reality, not another culture war. I genuinely think people have become more bitter and less social over the last few years and it shows…
