One way to picture it is this: Imagine an enormous protector—like the Incredible Hulk—stepping in front of a frightened child. That protector isn’t trying to destroy love. It’s trying to prevent the child from feeling unbearable shame. Deep down, many people with avoidant attachment carry beliefs like: “I’m not enough.” “I’m going to disappoint people.” “If someone gets too close, they’ll eventually see what’s wrong with me.” So when intimacy deepens or conflict arises, their protective system can take over. It creates convincing stories. “They’re asking too much.” “I’m trapped.” “I need to get out.” Those stories can feel completely true because they’re operating from unconscious survival strategies rather than conscious choice. Seeing this can help you respond with compassion instead of hatred. But compassion does not mean waiting. It does not mean rescuing. And it does not mean abandoning yourself. If someone isn’t choosing the relationship… If they aren’t willing to look inward… If they aren’t doing the work to heal the protective patterns that keep pushing love away… There is nothing you can do for them. Your work is different. Your work is to comfort the part of you that still longs to be chosen. To heal the younger self who believes love must be earned.
